Kwanzaa

  1. Umoja – Unidad
  2. Kujichagulia – Autodeterminación
  3. Ujima – Trabajo colectivo y responsabilidad
  4. Ujamaa – Economía cooperativa
  5. Nia – Propósito
  6. Kuumba – Creatividad
  7. Imani – Fe

Símbolos principales

  • Kinara – candelabro
  • Mishumaa Saba – siete velas (negra, rojas y verdes)
  • Mkeka – estera o tapete (base)
  • Mazao – cosechas

Kwanzaa is a week-long cultural celebration honoring African heritage and African-American culture. It is observed December 26 – January 1 each year.

What Kwanzaa Celebrates

Kwanzaa focuses on community, culture, and shared values rather than religion. Families and communities come together for reflection, learning, and celebration.

The Seven Principles (Nguzo Saba)

Each day highlights one principle:

  1. Umoja – Unity
  2. Kujichagulia – Self-Determination
  3. Ujima – Collective Work & Responsibility
  4. Ujamaa – Cooperative Economics
  5. Nia – Purpose
  6. Kuumba – Creativity
  7. Imani – Faith

Key Symbols You’ll See

  • Kinara – candle holder
  • Mishumaa Saba – seven candles (black, red, green)
  • Mkeka – woven mat (foundation)
  • Mazao – crops (harvest)
  • Kikombe cha Umoja – unity cup
  • Zawadi – gifts, often meaningful or educational

How It’s Observed

People may light a candle each night, discuss the day’s principle, share stories, enjoy music and food, and on January 1, hold a communal feast called Karamu.

If you want, I can explain how to celebrate a specific day, the meaning of the colors, or help with a short presentation or school project on Kwanzaa.
